What is Integrated Farm Assurance for fruits and vegetables?
The Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard for fruit and vegetables is a globally recognized certification standard that aims to promote responsible farming practices at primary production level. Good agricultural practices are not only about ensuring safe products, but also about protecting the environment, supporting workers, and improving farm management systems.
IFA is a farm-level assurance system designed for global supply chains that addresses key challenges in modern agriculture.
Core topics in IFA v6 for fruit and vegetables include:
- Traceability
- Food safety
- Workers’ health, safety, and welfare
- Biodiversity and habitats
- Energy efficiency
- Waste management
- Fertilizers and biostimulants
- Water management
- Integrated pest management
- Plant protection products
Applicable to farms of all sizes and production systems, from open-field cultivation to greenhouse and hydroponic systems, IFA covers more than 600 species of fruit and vegetables. Using a risk-based and outcome-oriented approach aligned with international frameworks such as the Global Food Safety Initiative and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, IFA is implemented in over 130 countries, with certified production processes covering more than 4.2 million hectares worldwide.
Efficient farm management and responsible production practices have a direct impact on product quality, operational efficiency, and the environment. The value of structured processes, proper resource use, and well-managed farm operations create value throughout the supply chain. As a comprehensive management tool, IFA helps producers establish and maintain robust farm management systems by defining clear requirements for responsible agricultural practices in primary production.
